The EVMP and the Plataforma del Voluntariado de Espana hosted a workshop on March 28 in Madrid that brought the leadership of the volunteering community in Spain together with government and Statistics officials from Spain’s National Institute for Statistics (Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, INE) to discuss the measurement of volunteering, and explore possibilities for implementation of the ILO Manual in Spain.

This workshop was as part of a pre-conference event of the Service Innovation Summit which was hosted by Meridian International Center’s Global Service Leadership Initiative, the U.S. Embassy in Spain, and the Rafael del Pino Foundation. The Summit was designed to present innovative solutions to addressing social challenges in Spain through service and volunteering, surface collaborative opportunities, and call participants to action. The importance of having better, more reliable and comparable data on volunteering came up throughout the Summit and was highlighted in the conclusions as one of the concrete recommendations made by the Summit working groups.

La Fundación Realmadrid ha participado en la I Cumbre de Innovación en el Voluntariado, un proyecto con adolescentes y mayores, promovido por la embajada de Estados Unidos, que tuvo lugar en el Instituto Gómez Moreno, en el barrio madrileño de San Blas. La jornada se celebró en el Día Global del Servicio Voluntario Juvenil, una campaña anual que moviliza a millones de niños, niñas y jóvenes y cuyo objetivo es promover el compromiso con el servicio a los demás dentro de una comunidad.

Los entrenadores de la Fundación Realmadrid fueron los encargados en estas jornadas de enseñar ejercicios y actividades deportivas que ayudan a tener cuerpos más sanos. La Cumbre de Innovación en el Voluntariado nace en Madrid a finales de marzo y tiene como lema “Cuerpos Sanos, Vecindarios Sanos”. En total, más de 400 adolescentes y un centenar de voluntarios participaron en la jornada que fue inaugurada por el embajador de Estados Unidos, Alan D. Solomont; el director gerente de la Fundación Realmadrid, Julio González Ronco; y el concejal del distrito de San Blas, David Erguido.

Cuerpos Sanos, Vecindarios Sanos. San Blas, Madrid

As part of the Service Innovation Summit held at the end of March in Madrid, the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Meridian International Center, and the Fundacion Rafael del Pino hosted a service project today in the district of San Blas of Madrid. Many will collaborate to make this project possible including the Realmadrid Foundation, the Plataforma del Voluntariado in Spain, and the Ayuntamiento of Madrid.

This project took place during Global Youth Service Day an annual campaign that celebrates the mobilization of thousands of youth in service to better their community.

We know that some of you are gathering today to volunteer in the San Blas Community in Madrid. I am writing on behalf of all who are unable to be there in person – new friends and contacts from the Service Innovation Summit as well as the larger Global Service Leaders Community. We are definitely with you in spirit!

You are not alone - Over the next few days, and around the world, volunteers of all ages will come together in similar ways to serve in honor of the Global Youth Service Days, Earth Day, and for a number of other causes. The impact of your hard work will not only be felt in this local community, but also shared by your peers. I also want to stress the value of the example you are setting today volunteering with youth from the neighborhood. This was a theme that we heard over and over again at the Summit and I think an area where there could be real progress in Spain.

“Queremos dejar una huella social en el mundo”

A Jonathan Greenblatt se le han pegado las sábanas. El jet lag y la actividad de Madrid han hecho mella en el asesor especial del presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama. La entrevista, que debía empezar a las 7.30, comienza finalmente a una hora algo más normal para las latitudes mediterráneas y acompañada de abundante café con leche. Greenblatt, director de la Oficina de Innovación Social y Participación Cívica de la Casa Blanca, es un hombre activo y se nota, aunque reconoce que hoy tiene el reloj biológico “desajustado”. Empresario y alto ejecutivo, pasó por varios puestos en el sector privado antes de ocupar su despacho actual, desde el que intenta promover el voluntariado y la acción social en un país que considera el servicio a la comunidad uno de los pilares de su cultura.

Service Innovations Summit: Global Lessons on the Role of Nonprofits & Volunteerism

Across the globe, there’s growing recognition of the value of nonprofits and volunteers joining with corporations and governments to solve social issues. Last month, I was honored to participate in a conversation about the most effective ways those sectors can come together at the inaugural Service Innovations Summitin Madrid. The international summit was co-hosted by the U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Alan Solomont, the Rafael del Pino Foundation in Madrid, and the Meridian Center in Washington. The summit brought together the corporate sector, foundations, and NGO’s from Spain, a handful of other European countries, as well as the US to share information and best practices related to volunteering, corporate social responsibility, and public-private partnerships. Being in Madrid added a sense of urgency to the summit: in Spain, one-in-four people is unemployed (one-in-two people under the age of 25 is unemployed) and in the middle of the conference there was a one-day negotiated general strike across the country to protest recent labor law changes that made it less costly to hire and fire workers.

“Somos Escuela Cultura de Paz, una asociación sin ánimo de lucro, formada por más de dos mil profesores (todos en activo, que trabajamos dentro del aula con jóvenes de 12 a 18 años) y por más de veintidós mil jóvenes que han pasado y siguen pasando por nuestras actividades en pro de la formación en valores, la cultura de paz y el voluntariado (con jóvenes universitarios también).
